Hey Magdallena: A Sweet Script Typeface for Handmade Labels & Invitations

I was halfway through designing a new set of soy candle labels—amber glass, kraft paper wraps, twine accents—when I paused. The clean sans serif I’d used for the scent names felt too crisp, too quiet against the warmth of the wax and the softness of the packaging. I needed something that whispered *hand-poured*, *thoughtful*, *loved*. That’s when I opened Hey Magdallena.

Right away, it felt like finding the right ribbon for a gift: delicate but intentional, playful but polished. Hey Magdallena is a sweet calligraphy typeface where characters gently dance along the baseline—not wild or exaggerated, but with just enough lift and flow to feel alive. It’s casual enough for a farmer’s market tote bag, elegant enough for a wedding welcome board. As a script font from Script Amp, it sits beautifully between expressive handwriting and refined display typography—never stiff, never sloppy.

I tested it first on a small batch of 1.5-inch sticker labels for mini candle tins. With its open letterforms and gentle contrast, Hey Magdallena held up surprisingly well at tiny sizes—no cramped loops or tangled joins. For larger applications, like a 5×7 greeting card or a digital printable wall art piece, the rhythm really shines: letters breathe, swashes flow naturally, and ligatures (like the lovely “fl” and “th” pairings) add subtle sophistication without needing manual tweaking.

What makes Hey Magdallena especially useful for makers is how gracefully it bridges physical and digital use. I’ve used it for:

It’s not built for long paragraphs—that’s not its job. Hey Magdallena is a display font, meant for names, titles, short quotes, product names, and decorative emphasis. Think of it as your go-to for anything you want to feel handmade *at first glance*. When customers see it on a holiday gift tag or a seasonal sticker sheet, it quietly signals care, attention to detail, and creative intention—even before they read the words.

For cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette, I always check the vector outlines first. Hey Magdallena includes clean, well-spaced glyphs with no overlapping paths—critical for smooth cuts on vinyl or iron-on. I also test-print a few letters at actual size on my home printer before sending files to a label vendor. At 8–10pt, it stays legible on small product tags; at 24pt+, its swashes and alternate characters (like the flourished “y” or looping “g”) become real design assets.

Font pairing is where Hey Magdallena truly sings. I keep a clean, neutral sans serif (think Inter or Lato) in my design kit for supporting text—ingredients, dates, disclaimers, sizing charts. For contrast, a gentle serif like Playfair Display works beautifully in printables or invitations, letting Hey Magdallena lead while the serif grounds the layout. Avoid pairing it with another busy script—it can compete rather than complement.

Before using Hey Magdallena commercially—whether on physical products, SVG bundles, or editable Canva templates—I double-check the license. As a commercial font from Script Amp, it permits use in both physical goods and digital downloads, but I always confirm included file formats (.OTF/.TTF), language support (it covers basic Latin characters well), and whether stylistic alternates or swash sets are accessible via OpenType features. That way, when I drop it into a Procreate mockup or a PDF printable, I know exactly which flourishes will appear—and which ones need manual selection.

Last week, I used it for a set of spring-themed printable wall art: three minimalist botanical prints with single-line illustrations and soft watercolor backgrounds. Hey Magdallena’s name “Bloom”, “Rooted”, and “Tend” sat perfectly beneath each image—light, lyrical, and unmistakably hand-crafted. No extra effects needed. Just the typeface, thoughtful spacing, and white space. That’s the magic: it doesn’t shout. It invites.

If you’re choosing a script font for your shop—whether you sell candles, stationery, digital templates, or custom apparel—Hey Magdallena offers that rare balance: personality without pretense, elegance without stiffness, and versatility without compromise. It feels like handwriting you wish you could do yourself—fluid, friendly, and full of quiet confidence. And when your customer holds that invitation, peels that sticker, or unrolls that tote bag, that feeling? That’s brand identity, made tangible—one graceful curve at a time.
